As there is not yet a vaccine to prevent the coronavirus (COVID-19), the best way to avoid becoming infected is to avoid being exposed to the virus. According to the CDC, it is believed to be spread mainly from person-to-person contact, from close proximity as well as through respiratory droplets produced when someone with coronavirus coughs or sneezes. Most cases are mild, but the elderly and people with certain underlying chronic conditions seem to be at a higher risk for developing complications if infected.

The good news: there are steps we can take to protect ourselves and mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

  • Clean your hands often, for at least 20 seconds

  • Stay away from crowds

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

  • Stay home if you’re sick, except to get medical care

  • Cover coughs and sneezes, then wash your hands immediately after

  • If you are sick, wear a facemark

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick

  • Clean & disinfect frequently touched surfaces on a daily basis

  • Take care of yourself - eat nutritious foods, manage stress, and get enough sleep
