Acupuncture for Men’s Health

Men’s health concerns can sometimes be easy to put off, especially when symptoms start gradually or don’t seem urgent at first.

A nagging pain gets “walked off.” Stress gets pushed through. Sleep can be terrible for months before it becomes a conversation. And concerns involving urinary, pelvic, or sexual health may be ignored simply because they feel awkward to bring up.

But health concerns usually become easier to address when we actually talk about them.

Acupuncture can be one part of a broader, whole-body approach to men’s health, particularly for pain, stress, and certain pelvic-health concerns.

Chronic Pelvic Pain and Prostatitis Symptoms

One of the more interesting areas of research involves chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, often shortened to CP/CPPS.

This condition can involve pelvic or perineal pain, urinary symptoms, discomfort with sexual activity, and a major effect on quality of life.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 12 randomized trials and found that acupuncture produced larger improvements in overall CP/CPPS symptom scores than sham acupuncture or medication comparisons, with particularly notable improvement in pain. The review reported no serious adverse effects in the included trials.

A second 2023 review restricted its analysis to higher-quality randomized trials and reached a similar conclusion, reporting improvements in pain, urinary symptoms, quality of life, and overall symptom scores.

That does not mean every pelvic or urinary symptom should be treated with acupuncture first. New, severe, or unexplained symptoms need medical evaluation. Acupuncture can be considered as complementary care once serious causes have been addressed.

What About Erectile Function?

This is another area where the answer needs some nuance.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Sexual Medicine Reviews evaluated 21 randomized controlled trials and found improvements in several erectile-function measures among men receiving acupuncture.

However, the authors rated the certainty of the evidence from very low to moderate and specifically stated that the evidence was not strong enough for definitive conclusions.

So, yes, there is research worth watching.

No, we should not tell men that acupuncture is a proven treatment for erectile dysfunction.

ED can also have many contributors, including cardiovascular health, blood sugar issues, hormones, medications, stress, and anxiety, so proper medical evaluation matters.

Pain, Tension and Recovery

Of course, men’s health is much bigger than reproductive or pelvic health.

Men commonly seek acupuncture for low-back pain, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, joint pain, sports injuries, and chronic aches that make work, exercise, or sleep less comfortable.

The evidence for acupuncture is strongest in chronic pain. A major meta-analysis published in The Journal of Painanalyzed data from 20,827 patients across 39 randomized trials and found acupuncture superior to both sham acupuncture and no-acupuncture controls for several chronic pain conditions.

When tight muscles are a major part of the problem, cupping may also be used alongside acupuncture. A large systematic review found encouraging pain-related results for cupping, although researchers cautioned that the studies had a high risk of bias.

For the right person, the two can make a natural pairing for areas such as the back, shoulders, and hips.

Stress Counts as Men’s Health, Too

Stress may show up as irritability, poor sleep, jaw tension, headaches, digestive changes, fatigue, or feeling like the brain never truly shuts off.

You do not need to wait until your body forces you to slow down.

At The Points of Health in Orlando, acupuncture treatments are individualized around the whole person - your symptoms, health history, stress, sleep, activity level, and goals. Whether you are dealing with pain, tension, pelvic discomfort, or simply want to take a more proactive approach to your health, asking for support is a strong place to start.
