Acupuncture for Women’s Health: Support Through the Many Seasons of a Woman’s Life

A woman’s body is constantly changing.

From the menstrual years through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause, hormones can affect far more than a monthly cycle. They can influence sleep, energy, mood, headaches, digestion, body temperature, pain, and the way you feel in your own skin.

Acupuncture has a long history of use in women’s health, and modern researchers are now studying where it may offer meaningful support.

Menstrual Pain

Period pain is common, but “common” does not mean you simply have to suffer through it.

A 2026 systematic review and network meta-analysis published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine looked at 120 studies involving 9,571 people with primary dysmenorrhea, or painful periods without another underlying pelvic condition.

Researchers found that several acupuncture-related therapies were associated with improvements in pain.

Earlier systematic reviews have reported similar findings, while also noting that study quality can vary.

For someone dealing with cramping, low-back discomfort, headaches, digestive changes, or tension around the menstrual cycle, acupuncture may be one option to discuss as part of a broader care plan.

Endometriosis-Related Pain

Endometriosis is more complex and requires appropriate medical evaluation and management. Acupuncture does not “cure” endometriosis.

It may, however, help some women manage pain.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Integrative Medicine Research examined six studies involving 331 participants. Acupuncture was associated with clinically relevant improvements in pelvic and menstrual pain, although the certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate depending on the outcome.

That makes acupuncture a possible complementary tool - not a replacement for gynecologic care.

Perimenopause, Menopause and Hot Flashes

Hot flashes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood changes, and fatigue can make the menopause transition feel anything but subtle.

Research on acupuncture for hot flashes is mixed, but some trials and reviews have found benefit.

A systematic review of 13 randomized controlled trials involving 1,784 patients found a reduction in hot-flash frequency from baseline compared with sham acupuncture, though differences were not consistent across every measure.

In other words, some women may find it helpful, but the research does not support promising that acupuncture will eliminate menopausal symptoms.

Fertility Support

Fertility is one of the areas where careful language matters most.

Acupuncture is commonly used alongside fertility care, including IVF, for relaxation, symptom support, and overall wellness. Research has reported possible improvements in some pregnancy outcomes, but results are inconsistent and the certainty of evidence is generally low.

A large 2023 review of 58 randomized trials involving 10,968 women undergoing IVF found higher pooled clinical pregnancy and live-birth rates in acupuncture groups, but the authors emphasized that the overall evidence quality was low and study methods varied considerably.

So we do not believe in promising babies. No ethical practitioner should.

We do believe there can be value in supporting the woman going through the process.

Individualized Care Matters

“Women’s health” is not one condition, and acupuncture should never be one-size-fits-all. Your symptoms, cycle, age, health history, medications, stress, sleep, nutrition, fertility goals, and medical diagnoses all matter.

At The Points of Health in Orlando, acupuncture is customized to the individual woman and the season she is in. Whether you are navigating painful periods, pelvic discomfort, fertility treatment, hormonal changes, or menopause, the goal is to support your body thoughtfully while working alongside the medical care you need.
