Which Acupuncture Points?

Whether you are new to acupuncture, or have long enjoyed the many health benefits, you might be curious: how does my acupuncture physician decide which points to use?

Your Maitland Acupuncture Physician Amy White decides specifically which points to treat mostly through both observation and asking questions. In traditional Chinese Medicine, there are five diagnostic methods: inspection, inquiring, olfaction, auscultation, and palpation.

  • Inspection focuses on the face and tongue, including an analysis of the tongue size, tension, shape, color and coating, and the absence or presence of teeth marks around the edge.

  • Inquiring focuses on the “seven inquiries” which are: appetite, perspiration; chills & fever, taste & thirst; defecation & urination; pain, menses & leukorrhea, and sleep.

  • Olfaction refers to the body’s odor.

  • Auscultation refers to listening to the body’s sounds, for example, wheezing, coughing, etc.

  • Palpation involves feeling the body for tender “ashi” points, particularly palpation of the left and right radial pulses at two levels of pressure (superficial and deep) and three positions on the wrist/forearm: Cun, Guan, Chi.
