Acupuncture for Bursitis

Bursitis is a painful condition caused by inflamed bursae. These small fluid-filled sacs provide lubrication and cushion to the joints, thereby softening the impact between bones, tendons and muscles. With over 150 bursae throughout the body, inflammation can occur near any joint. Most commonly affected joints are the shoulders, elbows, and hips, because these joints perform repetitive motions frequently. People with bursitis may experience:

  • Painful joints

  • Joints that feel stiff, or “frozen”

  • Pain when touched in affected areas

  • Joints that are red and swollen

Often the culprits are consistent, repetitive activities or holding an awkward position for too long. This may include things like leaning on your elbows for too long or constantly being on your feet. Bursitis can also be caused by injury, trauma, or infection. Bursitis can also occur as a result of an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout. While anyone can develop bursitis, it becomes more likely as we age.

If you find yourself suffering from any of these symptoms, or if you have already received a diagnosis of bursitis, you may want to consider making an appointment with your Winter Park acupuncture practitioner.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that is used to help restore balance and promote well-being. This natural healing technique involves the insertion of tiny, hair-thin needles on specific points on the body, and has been found to be a powerful remedy in the treatment of pain.

Many people find that their symptoms disappear within a few days or weeks of receiving acupuncture, especially if acted on right away. However, some people do experience a recurrence of symptoms known as “flare-ups.” Your acupuncture practitioner can address the underlying cause of your bursitis and provide treatment if you experience future flare-ups.

Your Orlando acupuncture practitioner can help guide you to the right course of action depending on whether your bursitis is the result of overuse of a particular joint, or if you are also suffering from a disease like rheumatoid arthritis. Your treatment will be focusing on addressing the pain and swelling associated with either. In addition to helping with symptoms of pain in the affected area, acupuncture also aims to provide relief to areas of the body that may be indirectly impacted by bursitis. For example, having bursitis in one knee may cause you to put extra pressure on the unaffected knee, hence overusing those muscles and ending up with pain as a result.

If you’re struggling with bursitis, book an Orlando acupuncture treatment now!
