Eat for Relief: Nutrition for Arthritis Pain

Nutrition plays a huge role in our health and functioning. From gut health and proper neurotransmitter functioning to pain and inflammation, the nutritional choices you make can greatly impact your quality of life.

Arthritis is a perfect example; many people have found that by choosing nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory foods they can decrease their pain and disease progression.

In particular, a vegan diet, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, has been a beneficial lifestyle change for people suffering from arthritis pain. Others have found relief from a Mediterranean-style diet of fish, nuts and seeds, brands, fruits, vegetables and olive oil. At the very least, limiting processed foods and dairy can help decrease the inflammation that causes pain.

Other helpful diet and lifestyle changes include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids

  • Plant-based diet

  • Turmeric

  • Acupuncture

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Gluten-free diet

  • Dairy-free diet

  • Bone broth

  • High anti-oxidant foods

  • Stay active

  • Proteolytic enzymes

  • Improve gut health

Not every diet works for everyone, some people do better going vegan, others keto or paleo, Mediterranean, and so on. It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you. That said, most people see improvements in their health, functioning, and wellbeing by eating more nutrient-dense foods and limiting processed, chemical-laden “food.” Start by adding more healthy, inflammation-fighting, nutrient-rich foods. Pay attention to how you feel, and what seems to increase or decrease your symptoms, and go from there.
